Wellbeing

Lead by Sarah Brown

At Mary Queen of Heaven, we acknowledge the importance of teaching Wellbeing for learning. Research shows that children are best placed to learn when their wellbeing needs are met. Educators are trained to implement Berry Street practices, including fostering authentic relationships, understanding emotions and how they manifest in our bodies, and supporting children to understand and mange their emotions using trauma-informed and evidence-based strategies. Our day begins with a practice that supports children to get ‘Ready to Learn’. This includes a greeting, where every child has the opportunity to be welcomed and feel ‘valued’, a positive primer, which releases positive, ‘feel-good’ hormones, and explicit teaching of tools and strategies for understanding and managing emotions as well as conflict resolution skills. Educators implement brain breaks throughout the day when children require support to ‘get ready to learn’.
