At Mary Queen of Heaven, we believe children flourish when they develop the skills to communicate effectively and understand the world around them. Our Literacy approach equips them with these skills.
In line with MACS’ vision for instruction, we use explicit teaching, provide opportunities for rehearsal, and regularly check for understanding. Data is tracked and used to design small, targeted teaching groups.
Children learn the content of speaking & listening, reading and writing while also developing capabilities from the Victorian Curriculum, such as Ethical Capability, Critical and Creative Thinking, and Personal and Social Capability.
Our reading program builds strong foundations in phonics, phonemic awareness, and spelling through InitiaLit (Prep–2). In Grades 3–6, Novel Studies enrich comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, and critical thinking.
Writing is contextual and purposeful, closely linked to Novel Studies, inquiry, and faith learning, allowing children to respond to storybooks and authentic learning experiences.
In line with MACS’ vision for engagement, we establish clear expectations, routines, and engagement norms to support success.
Finally, Inquiry learning provides authentic opportunities to connect Literacy with real-world contexts, while strengthening speaking and listening skills.
