At Mary Queen of Heaven, we believe that children are best placed for success in life when they have the skills that enable them to communicate effectively and understand the world around them. Our Literacy approach aims to equip children with such skills.
Educators use data to inform their teaching, designing target teaching groups that address their needs. Alongside learning the content of speaking & listening, reading and writing, children have the opportunity to build capabilities. Capabilities encompass knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions.
Our reading approach focuses on building children’s phonics and phonemic awareness, using strategies that are effective and evidence-based, that provide children with the building blocks for reading success. This is achieved through the InitiaLit program Prep-2. InitiaLit is an evidence-based whole-class literacy program providing all children with the essential core knowledge and strong foundations to become successful readers and writers.
Children’s comprehension and thinking skills are further enriched through Novel Studies in Grades 3-6. This approach enables children to deeply consider themes, characters and plot development.
Our writing approach aims to instill a love of writing in children, building their confidence to be effective writers through ‘Bookmaking’.
Discovery provides countless opportunities for children to build speaking and listening skills, through authentic learning.
